Setting up your Launchpad is a straightforward process that gets you making music quickly. This guide will walk you through connecting your hardware, installing the necessary software, and starting your first project.
Initial Setup
First, unbox your Launchpad and connect it to your computer using the provided USB cable. Your computer should automatically recognize the device. The Launchpad is a class-compliant MIDI controller, which means you do not need to install any drivers for it to work with your computer.
Next, you need to register your product to access the included software. Create an account on the Novation website launchpad.classlink.com/fcs and enter the serial number found on the bottom of your Launchpad. After registration, you will find links to download Ableton Live Lite, a digital audio workstation (DAW), along with other bundled software and sound packs.
Software Installation
To start using your Launchpad, you need to install a DAW. Ableton Live Lite is a great starting point and comes free with your Launchpad. Download the installer from your Novation account and follow the on-screen instructions to install it on your computer.
Once installed, open Ableton Live Lite.The software needs to be configured to work with your Launchpad.Go to the preferences menu,which is usually under the”Live”or”Options”tab, depending on your operating system.In the “Link/Tempo/MIDI”tab,you will see a section for control surfaces.Select your Launchpad model from the dropdown menu.For the input and output,also select your Launchpad website launchpad.classlink.com/forsyth.Make sure the”Track,””Sync,” and “Remote” buttons are all turned on for both the input and output of your Launchpad.
Making Music
With your Launchpad configured, you are ready to make music. Ableton Live is divided into two main views: Session View and Arrangement View. The Launchpad is designed to work seamlessly with the Session View, which is organized in a grid of clips.
Each pad on your Launchpad corresponds to a clip slot in Ableton Live’s Session View. These clips can contain melodies, drum beats, or other audio samples. Pressing a pad will trigger the corresponding clip, and you can launch multiple clips at once to build a song. The colors of the pads on your Launchpad will match the colors of the clips in Ableton, giving you a visual representation of your session.
You can use the buttons at the top and side of your Launchpad to navigate your session, control volumes, and apply effects. For example, the arrow keys let you move around the grid of clips, while the mixer buttons allow you to adjust the volume, pan, and sends for each track.
